Her project aims to structurally characterize the Taurine transporter and to make a homology model of this transporter in order to gain a better insight of this still not well known transporter. Taurine (SLC6A6) belongs to the GABA transporter, which belong to the family of neurotransmitters known as sodium symporters, also known as solute carrier 6 (SLC6). She will focus on the GABA subfamily as the Taurine transporter is part of this family. The reason why we focus on this family is that they are extremely important because it carries amino acids, neurotransmitters, osmolytes and metabolites, therefore it is considered a drug key target.
