"Our goal is to help people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Oral enzyme therapies are up and coming for various food intolerances, but so far they only encapsulate the required enzymes directly. We imagine a world where patients don't have to worry about taking their pills everywhere: In our project, Friendzyme, we encapsulate live lactic acid bacteria in a polymer casing that can temporarily attach to the gut mucosa. The bacteria then produce enzymes to break down FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols) directly where they are needed - in our gut."
